Not all laundry rooms are built equally. We've all had an encounter at one point in our lives with a laundry room that was difficult to navigate. The last thing anyone wants is a space that they dread entering. Here are some important laundry room features to improve your space either for yourself, or for potential homebuyers if you are thinking about smart renovations.
Laundry room sinks truly go the extra mile. They can be used to hand wash clothes, but they are often used to pot indoor plants and even wash pets. Having a large, deep sink in your laundry room will provide a utility that the space needs. If you would like to make it more aesthetically pleasing, opt for a farmhouse enameled cast iron sink over an industrial stainless steel one. Your laundry room is often a multipurpose space, so build a sink that can serve those purposes.
If your space and budget has the capability, custom drying drawers and/or cabinets is the way to go. Many garments need to be dried flat instead of being dried in a dryer. Thin drying drawers with mesh bottoms allow you to dry multiple pieces of clothing in a small space without causing an eyesore. Alternatively, if you would like something that is ready to use, you can opt for a drying cabinet. You can change the doors with mesh to allow your clothing to breathe as they are drying.
Many laundry machines today are built taller and front-loading to save your back. However, not all are. If you have an older machine or a special modern one that isn't as tall, try raising it in your laundry room so that it can save your back from any pain it might encounter from regularly stopping down to change over laundry. Just remember that if this is a renovation you want to perform you will need extra support and planning to safely elevate your machines.
Built-in hamper storage is a must have in a laundry room as it can free up floor space and provide a convenient spot to place a hamper when not in use. By designing a space with hamper storage, you create an area that has optima! functionality and organization.
Laundry rooms tend to be a catch all space. Why not design the space with that in mind? It's easy to add a few rods to hold wrapping paper. The countertop that would traditionally be used for folding clothes can now also be used to wrap presents. One of your drawers in the space can hold tape, ribbons and bows. This goes to show that one space can lend itself easily to many purposes without having to do major redesign changes.
Have you thought about redesigning your laundry room? This is a space that can yield a nice return on your investment if you are hoping to attract potential homebuyers. It's also a room that is not often thought of, despite its regular usage! Hopefully these tips will help you with any renovations you would like to do to your laundry room.
