Ajax is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario. The town has a bustling business community, with more than 1900 small, medium and larger-sized businesses calling Ajax home. The opportunity for business development and employment draws many people to the area.
The ethnically diverse makeup of Ajax’s population brings with it a wealth of cultural community events, dining experiences, and live entertainment. There’s always something going on for local families.
Did you know that the Town of Ajax is named after the HMS Ajax, a World War II Royal Navy cruiser? When Ajax separated from the township of Pickering, this new area was named after the powerful British warship. This name is quite suited to the community, as it was home to a Defense Industries Limited (DIL) shell plant which opened in 1941. This production plant employed over 9,000 people who took up residence around the plant, and became the first residents of the newly-created town.
When the new Durham Region was created in 1974, some parts of the Township of Pickering were annexed to the Town of Ajax, such as Pickering Village and the Town of Pickering Beach.
Residents of Ajax are lucky to enjoy walking trails along the shores of Lake Ontario and the beautiful Duffins Creek and Carruthers Creek waterways. Several acres of natural parkland and forested areas can be found throughout the town.
Though Ajax already has a very busy downtown around the intersection of Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street, there are plans underway to revamp this area with the new Ajax City Centre. This area will feature new condo buildings, office towers, shopping malls and plazas along landscaped streets.
Since the 1980s, the population of Ajax has grown considerably. Initially a small town, it is now a bedroom community for those who work in Toronto and other parts of the GTA. Housing developments in the Town of Ajax are primarily made up of single family detached homes on individual lots.
From modest bungalows to larger 2-storey houses, there is a right-sized home for any buyer in Ajax. Many new subdivisions are being built near the northern boundaries of the town, with some townhomes and condominiums being constructed closer to the lake.
