History of Thornhill
Thornhill is divided between Markham and Vaughan, and runs along both the east and the west sides of Yonge Street. The first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, first developed Yonge Street as a means of military transportation. Yonge Street, the longest road in Canada, was finally completed in January 1794.
In the 1830s and 40s, Thornhill experienced constant growth and fortune. The business district developed on Yonge Street and residents traveled via stagecoaches between Holland Landing (Lake Simcoe) and York (Toronto) as the road conditions improved with new grading and stonework.
In 1896, the new mode of transportation reached Thornhill. This method of transportation was similar to what we know today as the streetcar. This method of transportation increased the population of Thornhill as now residents could work in neighboring cities. The population continued to grow until after the automobile was introduced. Population growth slowed until after WWI and II. At this time, existing communities were completed and the increasing popularity of the automobile brought more families into the city.
